Understanding sleep apnea is not difficult if you know all the facts about the disorder. It is defined as one or more pauses in breathing while you sleep. These pauses generally last from a few seconds to a few minutes and can occur up to 30 times in an hour. Normal breathing is resumed shortly after these non-breathing episodes and generally are accompanied by a gasping sound. If you have breathing difficulties more than three nights each week, then you probably have chronic sleep apnea. You more than likely experience tiredness upon awakening and you feel sleeping throughout the day.

Sleep apnea is often not diagnosed because there is no specific test that can be done on routine trips to your doctor. It also isn’t recognized unless you have a sleep partner. It occurs when your airways are somehow obstructed or have collapsed. This condition causes you to pause in your breathing. Then, when you then try to breathe, you may snore loudly. Central sleep apnea is a less-common form of the disease and it is triggered when your brain doesn’t send the correct signals to your breathing muscles. It often occurs with Obstructive sleep apnea but is normally not accompanied by snoring.
//-->

Obstructive sleep apnea needs to be treated because it can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. If you have it, you are at risk for developing cardiac failure and irregular heartbeats. You also are more prone to accidents because when you awake you are tired and confused. Sleep apnea means that you likely will have to make some major lifestyle changes in order for it to be treated successfully. You also may need to try other treatment options such as mouthpieces, surgery and breathing devices.

Your sleep apnea treatment will be ongoing and will require you to follow-up with your doctor regularly. Let your doctor know if you are experiencing any side effects that are unmanageable. If you are using CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), report any difficulties that you might be having to your doctor. He or she may be able to prescribe something different for you to use. You may also be able to get additional treatment to control any CPAP side effects.

Obstructive Sleep Apnia is a debilitating and irritating disorder that affects the lives of many people across the world today. It is the most common type of sleep apnea and is characterized by cessation of breath during sleeping periods. The upper airway is obstructed in several areas, usually by a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. These obstructions might be excess tissue, enlarged tonsils, and airway muscles that relax and collapse during sleeping periods. Also the way the jaw is structured and an obstruction in the nasal passages can cause some forms of sleep apnea.

There are several symptoms that occur when a person is experiencing sleep apnea. They include excessive sleepiness during the day and many episodes of obstructed breathing during sleep. A person with sleep apnea may snore loudly, have morning headaches and wake up unrefreshed. The person may have an exceptionally dry mouth upon awakening and have high blood pressure. Obesity and irritability are also other symptoms of people with sleep apnea. Sometimes a person’s personality changes dramatically. They may also have heartburn, reduced libido and frequent urination. Their sleep is restless and they may appear to be choking or gasping. Other symptoms may include confusion and a rapid gain of weight.

A person with Obstructive Sleep Apnea may experience other serious diseases if the condition goes undiagnosed. They run the risk of having a heart attack, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats and other cardiac diseases. They also are extraordinarily tired during the day which makes it likely that they will be accident-prone and unproductive at home and at work. Diagnosis for sleep apnea includes a sleep test which is done overnight. The patient is monitored to determine his or her sleep patterns. A home test can also be done to record sleeping functions.

Obstructive sleep apnia can be mild, moderate or severe. The mild form can usually be treated by making some type lifestyle or behavioral changes. Moderate to severe sleep apnea is generally treated using a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. Severe sleep apnea is best treated using one of several surgical techniques.

Sleep apnea is a medical condition that millions of Americans suffer from. The good news is that it is treatable and treatment goals include restoring regular breathing rhythms during sleep and relieving associated symptoms such as daytime sleepiness and snoring. sleep apnea treatments sometimes help manage other diseases and can also reduce risks of heart disease and diabetes. There are several recommended treatment options in treating the condition. They include mouthpieces, lifestyle changes, breathing devices and sometimes surgery. There is no medicine currently available that can be used to treat sleep apnea.

Changing routine habits sometimes help eliminate the symptoms of sleep apnea. Avoiding alcohol and sleep medication is one solution. If a person is overweight, losing some pounds will sometimes improve symptoms. Sleeping on the side, rather than the stomach, is often helpful. Other lifestyle changes that can be tried are using nasal sprays and allergy medicines and stopping smoking has proven effective in reducing sleep apnea symptoms.

Using a mouthpiece has been beneficial in reducing mild sleep apnea. It also has had a positive affect on people who have a tendency to snore at night. Mouthpieces can be custom made by dentists or orthodontists. They are made to adjust to the lower jaw and tongue so that airways remain open during sleeping periods.

One of the most common treatments for sleep apnea is CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). A mask is made to fit over the nose and mouth and it gently blows air into the throat during sleep. The air pressure is what keeps airways from becoming narrowed or blocked. Breathing devices such as CPAP are set up according to doctor’s orders and may need to be adjusted occasionally.

The final sleep apnea treatment option is surgery. The surgery itself tends to effective in only certain sleep apnea conditions. Its purpose is to widen breathing passages and this is done by removing or shrinking excess mouth or throat tissue or by resetting the lower jaw. This surgery can usually be done in the doctor’s office or in an outpatient hospital or clinic. Shrinking tissue may simply involve a series of injections and no actual surgery will have to be done. Hospitalization and surgery is required if tissue has to be removed. The patient is given a general anesthetic and will experience minor throat pain for a few days.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects millions of people all over the world. It deprives people of the rest they need to get through the next day. It is irritating to say the least and it is always something that everyone wants to avoid. Insomnia is something that occurs on a continuing basis and is something that can be controlled, either through medical means or by natural sleep aids. Chronic (or long-term) insomnia needs careful evaluation by a medical professional because it could be a symptom of something more serious such as sleep apnea or heart disease. Transient (or short-term) insomnia can be managed using natural remedies.

There are many natural ways to deal with insomnia and mild sleep disorders. The calming herb Valerian is sold over-the-country in many foreign countries. Melatonin works well for people with jet lag or for anyone who has had their sleep/wake cycle interrupted. Another herb, Kava, works well to reduce anxiety which is often the cause of insomnia. There are also some relaxation techniques to help a person fall asleep. Visualizing a relaxing scene is helpful when used along with muscle relaxation and yoga, which combines deep breathing, stretching and meditation. Watching what you eat plays a big role in your sleeping patterns. Avoiding caffeine and sweets is important and eating things high in carbohydrates, magnesium and amino acids help you sleep.

Aromatherapy using English lavender or chamomile is something that works quickly and well as a sleep aid. Researchers have also found that light has an effect on falling asleep. A dark room at night tells a body when its time to fall asleep and any natural light in the morning signals that it’s wake up time. Some people try listening to soothing music at bedtime. This improves sleep cycles and decreases the number of night wakenings.

In addition to the preceding remedies, there are other natural sleep aids such as acupuncture, Chinese medicine, moderate exercise and Feng Shui (the arrangement of rooms to promote favorable energy). Insomnia is something that can be dealt with naturally and quickly by following these recommended methods. Avoiding it at all costs is the primary goal of sufferers everywhere.

There is nothing quite so frustrating is trying to fall asleep and you simply cannot do it. You’ve tried everything from counting sheep to drinking a cup of warm milk. You have been tossing and turning for hours and you just cannot fall asleep. You are not alone in your efforts to deal with your sleeping disorder, which is most commonly referred to as insomnia. Insomnia and other sleep problems are bothersome medical conditions that affect everything you plan to do the next day.

There are many symptoms associated with insomnia and they include: difficulty falling asleep, waking up often during the night, difficulty returning to sleep, waking up early, daytime sleepiness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. All of these symptoms can be managed and it’s time to pay a visit to your doctor if you have any of them. You can also find many answers to your questions about your symptoms and insomnia at many online websites.

There are four types of insomnia that you should be aware of. Primary insomnia is a sleep disorder that exists in internal sleep-wake mechanisms. Secondary insomnia is caused by depression or anxiety, a medical condition such as arthritis, alcohol, caffeine and/or prescription, over-the-counter or illegal drugs, There are also two other types of insomnia that you should be aware of. They are short-term (or transient) insomnia which can be caused by jet lag or hormonal abnormalities, stress and anxiety and long-term (or chronic) insomnia which is caused by aging, hormonal fluctuations and psychiatric diseases.

Insomnia may just be a symptom of a more serious sleeping disorder. That is why you can’t ignore any symptoms that you might be experiencing. It is not a stand-alone disease. It is important that you find out why you can’t fall asleep because it might be the result of sleep apnea or even clinical depression. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that is caused when breathing is interrupted. The sleeper’s respiratory tract loses its muscle tone and partially collapses. The person actually wakes up during these sleep apnea episodes and this causes excessive sleepiness during the day. Insomnia, sleep apnea and depression are all medical conditions that require some type of medical intervention.

People who have sleep apnea may not realize that have actually had episodes of sleep apnea during the night. During these periods of non-breathing they probably woke up several times but can’t remember doing so. This causes daytime sleepiness which is a main sleep apnea symptom. Generally people who have sleep apnea snore heavily almost immediately after falling asleep. They then let out a gasp and the snoring quickly returns. This is a repetitive pattern that continues throughout the night.

There are many other tell-tale symptoms of a sleep apnea disorder. They include falling asleep during the day at inappropriate times, being “unrefreshed” in the morning, experiencing continual non-breathing episodes, loud snoring, difficulty with memory, poor concentration, restless sleeping patterns, tendency toward lethargy, morning headaches and changes in personality. Other symptoms include hyperactive behavior and sever swelling of the leg(s).

There is hope for those suffering from this worrisome disease. The primary goal is to keep the airway open, free from obstructions. There are some ways to at least relieve some of the symptoms and they include: 1.) Avoiding alcohol or sedatives before going to bed. 2.) Dental devices such as mouth guards to keep the jaw in a forward position.
3.) weight management or weight loss. One other treatment to try is CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). And, the very last treatment method is surgery such as Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, Tonsilectomy & Adnoidectomy, Tracheostomy, and Bariatric surgery. These surgeries are usually successful in removing excess tissue in the throat or by creating an opening in the trachea which bypasses the blocked airway. In children, the surgical method of choice is Tonsilectomy and adenoidectomy to remove enlarged tonsils and adenoids.

sleep apnea symptoms are something that shouldn’t be overlooked and ignored. They might signal some very mild form of sleep apnea or they might be a warning that something more serious is going on. See your doctor soon after experiencing any of the above symptoms and let him or her decide which method of treatment is best for you. Try some of the treatments mentioned earlier because you may find one that cures your sleep apnea or at the very least, helps you manage this debilitating medical condition.

Millions of Americans suffer from the irritating medical condition known as sleep apnea. One of the ways it can be treated is with surgery and there are a number of sleep apnea surgery choices that doctors use today. Surgery is never performed until other non-evasive treatments (such as mouth guards & CPAP) have been tried and have failed. The surgery choices are Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, Tonsillectomy and/or Adenoidectomy, Tracheostomy and Bariatric surgery.

Uvulopalatopharygoplasty is a surgical procedure which removes excess tissue from the throat and it generally results in a wider airway. It is used primarily for adults suffering from the disorder of sleep apnea. Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy removes the tonsils and adenoids. This surgical technique is used when a person has enlarged tonsils and adenoids that are blocking the airway. It is used often on children suffering from mild forms of sleep apnea. Tracheostomy is a surgery that creates a hole in the trachea. A tube is inserted in the hole to bring in air and it often results in a complete cure for the disorder. The final surgical procedure that can be tried is Bariatric surgery. It is done exclusively for weight loss and is used often to treat obese people who are having trouble sleeping. Another less common surgical option is laser-assisted Uvulopalatoplasty which utilizes a laser to perform the surgery. It is used to treat mild to moderate sleep apnea and has not proved to be as beneficial as other surgical methods.

Surgery is a choice that many doctors use when they have patients who have small airway dimensions or a floppy airway that tends to collapse. Surgery helps to enlarge the airway and decreases its collapsibility. The success rate of any sleep apnea surgery depends on the airway pattern and severity of the obstruction of each individual patient. And the surgery itself can be routine or quite complicated, depending on the patient’s medical condition. Sleep apnea surgery is becoming more and more common as a means to reduce or eliminate sleep apnea symptoms. It usually results in giving at least some relief to most patients and it is often recommended as a final way to deal with this sometimes serious medical condition.

Getting the right amount of sleep is an important factor to your overall health and well-being. Many people don’t get enough sleep and are always looking for hints on how to sleep better. There are several things that a person can do to assist them in getting “enough shuteye” during the night time hours. All it takes is a commitment to do whatever is necessary to help assure a relaxing and restful sleep. Suggestions are always a welcome sign to anyone having sleeping difficulties.

Some things that a person can try are: 1.) Keep a consistent bedtime and wake up schedule in order to get the same amount of sleep each night. 2.) Set up a relaxing bedtime routine and perhaps take a soothing warm bath. 3.) Make the bedroom a sanctuary for comfort and relaxation. 4.) Replace old saggy mattresses and pillows.
5.) Don’t keep electronic “toys” in the bedroom (computers, TVs, etc.) 6.) Don’t workout right before bedtime. 7.) Make sure the mattress is large enough and not crowded. 8.) Don’t smoke right before going to bed. 9.) Don’t drink caffeinated coffee at night. 10.) Don’t eat anything before going to bed. Finish eating three hours before bedtime.

One of the worse things you can do is ingest caffeine in the evening. It is a stimulant that is found in coffee, soda, iced tea and some over-the-counter medications. Caffeine stays in the system for up to 12 hours so even drinking coffee during the day stays with a person for a long time. Nicotine is also a stimulant and should be avoided when it’s getting close to bedtime. On the other hand, alcohol is a depressant and does help a person fall asleep. However, it also causes a restless sleep that may cause a person to wake up several times during the night. If you have to eat something in the evening, stick to foods high in carbohydrates or choose dairy products. Exercising vigorously before bed is another way to trigger a restless night of sleep. Try to keep your room dark, void of noise and at a moderate temperature. All of these suggestions are helpful in your quest on learning how to sleep better and longer.

Central sleep apnea is a medical condition in which a person stops breathing several times throughout the day or night. This happens when the brain stops sending signals to the muscles which control breathing. This condition often occurs in people who are suffering from severe illnesses such as diseases of the spinal column or brain stem. If these areas are damaged in some way, the correct and appropriate signals are not being received to control breathing while the person is asleep or awake. There are several other conditions that might also cause sleep apnea and they include Bulbar poliomyelitis, complications resulting from cervical spinal surgery, Encephalitis, Parkinson’s Disease, severe Arthritis at the base of the skull and even some medications. This form of apnea is not caused by a blockage in the airway as it is in obstructive sleep apnea.

Of the two different types of sleep apnea – obstructive and central – obstructive sleep apnea is the most common and it causes the person to breathe abnormally because of some type of obstruction in the airways. It can be treated with a breathing device or by making some specific lifestyle changes. The other type of sleep apnea is much more difficult to treat because it is often associated with heart failure and causes the brain to inadequately trigger the body to breathe normally. Recent studies have shown that patients in cardiac arrest often experience sleep apnea and end up with dangerously abnormal heart rhythms. The problem is that these abnormalities don’t show up until after any outward indication of dysfunction is evident. In fact, heart failure sometimes develops as a result of central apnea and is not necessarily a symptom of the condition.

Central sleep apnea is something that needs to be addressed quickly and effectively by medical professionals. When a person repeatedly stops breathing while asleep or awake is an indication that there is a serious problem going on. It warns that the brain is having trouble sending the right signals to muscles in the body. It is something that medical professional watch for whenever they have a seriously ill person in their care
