PostHeaderIcon What can I do for my Sleep Apnia while I’m waiting for the doctor office visit?

Ok I belive I have sleep apnia cause I have times(every since I was little) where I can’t breathe or wake up (this was confirmed by my doctor as he wanted me to get a referal to a sleep doctor (that what I call him) but with his appointments not opening up till either September or October and me not being sure where I’m going to school, what can I do to limit my sleep apania issues. Also I wonder does the medicine I’ve been taking recently (Steerra and Lamictal) have anything to do with it.

Try propping yourself up on some pillows so you breathe better. Sometimes it’s hard to breathe if your nose gets stuffy when you sleep, or if you have too much salvia sitting in your mouth. So try that. If you know you have trouble breathing through your nose when you sleep, get one of those nasal strips that’s supposed to help with snoring (since that’s caused by the same thing). You might also want to try sleeping on your sides if you can’t fall asleep propped up on pillows. It puts less weight on your chest so you can breathe a little easier, especially if you are overweight at all. My roommate’s mom has Sleep Apnia as well, and her doctor told her it was because of excess weight on her chest which inhibited her from breathing too deep. But if you’re not overweight, that’s not a problem. Make sure the room isn’t too dry, sometimes a little humidity can help. Get a humidifier to keep in your room. It won’t make the room feel any hotter, but it will be a little moister so you can breathe easier. You can also trying getting up every couple hours and walking around a bit (get a cup of water, go to the bathroom, etc) just to get your blood pumpin a little bit and start breathing a little deeper, maybe that will help stop your breathing from slowing down too much while you’re asleep.

That’s all I can think of, but it never hurts to do a Yahoo search or something. Those are just some of the things my boyfriend’s dad does because he has Sleep Apnia too. Try a couple different things and see what works best for you. Good luck!!

PostHeaderIcon Hints on How to Sleep Better

Getting the right amount of sleep is an important factor to your overall health and well-being. Many people don’t get enough sleep and are always looking for hints on how to sleep better. There are several things that a person can do to assist them in getting “enough shuteye” during the night time hours. All it takes is a commitment to do whatever is necessary to help assure a relaxing and restful sleep. Suggestions are always a welcome sign to anyone having sleeping difficulties.

Some things that a person can try are: 1.) Keep a consistent bedtime and wake up schedule in order to get the same amount of sleep each night. 2.) Set up a relaxing bedtime routine and perhaps take a soothing warm bath. 3.) Make the bedroom a sanctuary for comfort and relaxation. 4.) Replace old saggy mattresses and pillows.
5.) Don’t keep electronic “toys” in the bedroom (computers, TVs, etc.) 6.) Don’t workout right before bedtime. 7.) Make sure the mattress is large enough and not crowded. 8.) Don’t smoke right before going to bed. 9.) Don’t drink caffeinated coffee at night. 10.) Don’t eat anything before going to bed. Finish eating three hours before bedtime.

One of the worse things you can do is ingest caffeine in the evening. It is a stimulant that is found in coffee, soda, iced tea and some over-the-counter medications. Caffeine stays in the system for up to 12 hours so even drinking coffee during the day stays with a person for a long time. Nicotine is also a stimulant and should be avoided when it’s getting close to bedtime. On the other hand, alcohol is a depressant and does help a person fall asleep. However, it also causes a restless sleep that may cause a person to wake up several times during the night. If you have to eat something in the evening, stick to foods high in carbohydrates or choose dairy products. Exercising vigorously before bed is another way to trigger a restless night of sleep. Try to keep your room dark, void of noise and at a moderate temperature. All of these suggestions are helpful in your quest on learning how to sleep better and longer.
